Deskartes Privacy Policy

1. Overview

Deskartes is a gamified digital-literacy and technology-education app for students in grades K-12 and above, built by ChillTech Hub LLC ("ChillTech Hub," "we," "us," or "our"). Deskartes is designed to be used through school and classroom accounts. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to students, parents/guardians, and schools.

2. Information We Collect

We collect only what's needed to operate Deskartes and support the learning experience:

• Account information: a student's name or username, grade level/age band, school or district affiliation, and a parent or teacher email address associated with the account.
• Learning & progress data: lessons completed, ranks and badges earned, and other progress data used to personalize lessons.
• Device & app data: basic technical information (such as device type and app version) needed to keep Deskartes working correctly.

We do not collect more than what's necessary to run Deskartes. Parents and schools can opt out of optional, non-essential data collection at any time — see Section 6.

3. How We Use Information

We use the information above to:

• Create and manage student, parent, and teacher accounts
• Deliver age-appropriate lessons and track learning progress
• Give teachers and parents a summary of a student's progress
• Keep Deskartes safe, secure, and working properly

We do not use student information to serve targeted advertising, and we do not sell student data.

4. School and Parental Consent

Because Deskartes is built for K-12+ use, we require consent at two levels before a student account is activated:

• School/district consent: schools and districts that adopt Deskartes agree to our terms for educational use of the app, consistent with applicable student privacy laws.
• Parental consent: parents or guardians provide consent for their child's account, consistent with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for students under 13.

Parents and schools can withdraw consent at any time by contacting us (Section 13), which deactivates or deletes the associated account and data.

5. Age-Gating & Restricted Features

Deskartes adjusts what's available based on a student's grade level or age band. Certain features — such as community sharing or profile customization — may be limited or turned off entirely for younger students, and only unlock for older age bands where appropriate.

6. Your Choices

Parents, guardians, and schools can:

• Opt out of optional, non-essential data collection at any time
• Request a copy of a student's data
• Request correction or deletion of a student's data
• Withdraw consent and deactivate an account

7. How We Share Information

We do not sell student or user data. We may share information with:

• The student's school or district, to support classroom use and progress tracking
• Service providers who help us operate Deskartes (such as hosting), under agreements that limit their use of the data to providing that service
• Authorities, if required by law

We do not share student data with advertisers or data brokers.

8. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect information collected through Deskartes. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we work to protect information in a way appropriate for a K-12 educational product.

9. Data Retention

We retain student data only as long as needed to provide Deskartes to that student's school or family, or as required by the school's data retention policies. Schools and parents can request earlier deletion at any time.

10. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Deskartes is designed for use by students in grades K-12 and above, including children under 13. We collect personal information from children under 13 only with verifiable parental consent, obtained directly or through a school acting on behalf of parents consistent with COPPA's guidance for educational technology. Parents can review, correct, or delete their child's information, or refuse further collection, at any time by contacting us.

11. Student Data & School Agreements (FERPA)

Where Deskartes is used as part of a school's curriculum, certain information may be considered an "education record" under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). In these cases, we act on behalf of the school under its direction, and the school retains control over its students' education records, consistent with its FERPA obligations.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Deskartes evolves. We'll update the "last updated" date above and, for material changes, notify schools and/or parents directly.
